Kinser Earns First Charter Bandits Win In Final
Event Of 2008 Street Fights Season At Bristol Dragway
On Oct. 2, the Charter Bandits rode into Thunder Valley for the final time this season and put on a show that will keep everyone talking all winter.
With several drivers breaking on the line, or before they even pulled onto the track, J.W. Kinzer of Allen, Ky., wheeled his radical '03 Corvette into the final round against Jon Phillips.
After both cars staged, Phillips lost power on the launch. Kinzer could have backed off and coasted through the beams, but decided to keep his foot in the gas, taking the stripe with a 9.142 elapsed time at 150.98 mph…not bad for an 81-year-old.
Phillips defeated Donald Banks in the first round, before facing Nate Monteith in the next round. Phillips earned a free pass to the finals when Monteith never left the staging lanes.
Kinser defeated Car # 0567 in the first round and David Dockery of Dungannon, Va. in the second round.

Team Hurley USA "King of the Strip" True Street Challenge Champions Crowned At Thunder Valley
The inaugural season of the Team Hurley USA King of the Strip True Street Challenge presented by Mac Tools reached an exciting conclusion during the Aug. 30 Borla Back To School Bash at Bristol Dragway’s Street Fights.
Jon Phillips earned top honors in the 9-second class with a 9.025 average time during his three passes. He also collected $1,000 as the season champion for the 9-second index.
Chuck Ryan took home the winner’s trophy in the 10-second class by averaging a 10.191 elapsed time during the evening. The win also sealed the 10-second class championship and $1,000 dollars for Ryan.
Jonathan Williams’ 11.050 average E.T. was good enough to take the win in the 11-second class, while his season-long performance helped him earn the 11-second index championship.
Scott Vestal won the 12-second season championship as well as the season finale. His average 12.085 E.T. secured the victory in the final race.
Johnny Morris, with a 13.286 average, took the final first place in the 13-second division; however, Michelle Hachten will go to the bank with the $1,000 check for winning the championship in that division.
In 14-second competition, Allen Ottinger’s 14.107 average earned the victory, but it wasn’t enough to take the season championship away from Chris Johnson.
Team Hurley USA, Mac Tools and the Bristol Dragway staff want to thank every racer who participated in the King of the Strip True Street Challenge. Invite a few friends to join you and visit us again next season in Thunder Valley.
